Galveston County Master Gardener Herman Auer will present a program highlighting the elements for successfully growing bulbing onions, garlic, leek, and multiplier shallots. Auer will share his experience, knowledge, as well as mistakes he's made over the years while perfecting the art of growing onions and garlic.

Galveston County Master Gardener Deborah Repasz, photographer and hummingbird enthusiast, will present a program highlighting ways to increase hummingbird sightings in your yard. She will show you how to create an inviting habitat, including examples of shelter, food, and water, as well as other resources to utilize to attract hummingbirds. Also, she will include a discussion on the impact of the use of pesticides. Plants presented will be proven winners grown in the speakerís yard, many of which will be for sale at the Galveston County Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale on October 12.

Galveston County Master Gardener Gene Speller will present a program on Cruciferous and other favorite vegetables usually grown during fall and winter months. These include popular varieties of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard, kale, mustard and turnip greens, all members of the Cruciferous family. Other vegetables included will be several varieties of lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard. Many of the vegetables discussed in the presentation will be offered for sale as transplants at the Galveston County Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale on October 12.

Galveston County Master Gardener Karolyn Gephart's presentation will highlight the plants to be offered at the upcoming Galveston County Master Gardener Fall Plant Sale on October 12. The Galveston County Master Gardener plant sales have become popular and useful to the public because of the quality of plants offered, as well as the horticulture and gardening information and tips from the Master Gardeners present during the Sale.

Galveston County Master Gardener Karolyn Gephart will make a presentation highlighting the plants available in the sale.

 

Plant Sale

9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

LOCATION:  Rodeo Arena at the Galveston County Fair Grounds in Jack Brooks Park

Choose from thousands of plants adapted to the Texas Gulf Coast growing area. Fruit and citrus trees, bulbs, fall and winter vegetables, perennials, and garden crafts will be available. Volunteer certified master gardeners will be present to answer your questions. Customers are urged to bring their own wagons to cart around their chosen plants.

Galveston County Master Gardener Jim Gilliam's presentation he will describe how to evaluate the "health" of your garden soil. With only a spade and a wire flag, he will show how to conduct 18 tests that will allow you to determine your soil's quality. He will offer strategies for resolving deficiencies. Remember: Building great soil is the most important step to take for successful gardening.

Galveston County Master Gardener Lisa Nicklow Davis will present this program on butterflies and butterfly-attracting plants in the garden. Butterflies can be enjoyed in Galveston County almost year round. Davis's presentation will include different butterfly species that can be found in our area and what native plants to use in your garden or in containers to attract them.
